I have been fascinated with the idea of creating the illusion of magic ever since I was a young boy growing up in a small town in southeast Kansas. I still remember the great feeling of wonder that I had when my father performed a few simple magic effects for my brother and me. From that time on, magic has had a permanent role in my life.
I was a full-time professional magician for five years from 1974 to 1979, and enjoyed the experience very much. Eventually, however, I realized that being a professional magician was more about business than about learning new magic effects. At that point I turned my professional interests to computer science. That was a very good life decision, and I have discovered that computer programs often seem quite magical.
In 1979 I was invited by Obie O'Brien to
become one of the regular attendees to the 4F "Original Close-Up
Magic Convention". The 4F convention is an invitation only
close-up magic convention that is considered to be "the most
prestigious gathering of close-up magicians in the world". I am
proud that I have attended 4F for many years and have made many
magic friends by attending 4F.
In 1991 I moved to Ohio to become a
professor of Computer Science at the University of Mount Union,
and immediately joined the Youngstown Magic Club. I am a 9 time
winner of the Youngstown Magic Club Magician of the Year Contest.
I was Territorial Vice-President of the
International Brotherhood of Magicians for several years which
lead me to become the only person who is currently a member of 4
magic clubs in the area: Akron, Canton, Cleveland and Youngstown.
I also am a regular attendee at the Akron Magic RoundTable, which
means that I often attend several magic meetings every week!
Beginning in 2012, each fall semester I
have taught a college speaking and writing course at the
University of Mount Union titled "Sleight of Hand Magic: Theory
and Practice". The course is an enjoyable way for the students to
practice speaking and writing at a college level, and it is
remarkable to me that I have learned a great deal about magic from
my efforts to help the students.
In 2016 I became the organizer of the Jupiter Magic Theater in Alliance, Ohio. On the second Thursday of every month since May 2016, the Jupiter Magic Theater suddenly appears in Alliance, Ohio. There is close-up magic at the tables from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, and a full stage show from 7:00 to 8:00 PM with a different featured performer each month. It is a wonderful gathering shared by both magicians and magic fans. I hope to see you at the Jupiter Magic Theater on the second Thursday of next month.
